Jolly day!Happy Edgar Allan Poe's Birthday to one and all.

Last year I threatened to turn Poe's delightfully lighthearted, jolly poem "The Bells" into a picturebook, perhaps a merry board book for the very youngest readers, which I felt sure would guarantee sweet and comforting dreams to the littlest of impressionable kiddies. The offers of sacks of gold in advance haven't flowed in, but I did scribble a bit of something for a webcomics contest. And it did win the fabulous prize of having won a prize (15 minutes of pixellated fame). So, since it's Edgar's birthday again and I am compelled by contractual obligations to celebrate it in some way, herewith a repeat comic.

If you've seen it already, please pretend you haven't. There wasn't enough time to transcribe another Poe(m). For next year I'm thinking a "Murders in the Rue Morgue" graphic novel, acted by a cast of cute anthropomorphic kittens, guaranteed to be a comforting bedtime story. I know I always enjoyed falling asleep to Poe's tales of gruesome dismemberment. Which would explain a lot.

The Bells!

I really enjoyed this one. I'm still waiting for the picturebook.

Kinda sorta a picturebook...

Today I doodled a few ideas for re-doing this as a minicomic. A teeny tiny minicomic, of course. Maybe I could singe the edges for that "too artsy" effect and stick an autumn leaf to the last page. Rat-dragon-demon critters will not be included.

No, no...HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!

This was beautiful! If you made into into a book, I would buy it in a second!

I'm going to try the minicomic route (see above). That'll give me a chance to fix some of the goofy formatting on some of those lines... and... and... each copy comes with its own genuine 100-pound iron bell! They'll sell like hotcakes, I tell you.

Not only will they sell like hotcakes, they'll be really easy to transport to Austin for Staple! And who couldn't use a few more 100-pound iron bells??

Thank you (and everyone) for the birthday greetings.

(It almost makes me not completely thoroughly entirely hate having a birthday.)

I haven't seen this before, so it's a lot of fun. Love the demon/devil hammering on hell's roof with the broom. ;D

Happy birthday!

:-)

Hm... which Poe(m) should I do next...? I'll have to flip through the Complete Works and find something completely unlikely, with or without the anthropomorphic bunnies.

All for anthropomorphic bunnies

Not The Raven, just because it's been done so often. So many good ones to choose from though.

It's always nice to see pretty things twice. :-)

Many happy returns on this day and I hope you're doing something fun.
