This is what my self portraits usually look like:

Well, that's what they look like when I'm in a charitable mood.

For some reason I decided, as long as I'm on a watercolour kick, to try a fancier self portrait. After I scanned it...

I decided I was too tired to try hand-painting it and decided to try digital instead...

Does it actually look like me? I dunno. Marginally?

I can see a passing resemblance, but if I saw this drawing, I would not think it was you.

You have a more classical outlined face, you chin is more defined. Both you and the drawing are attractive, but again, I don't think it looks like you. <3

I also hold the opinion that you are lovely woman.

I like what Kyleen says above. There's something about it that looks like you ([livejournal.com profile] meritahut), but you're prettier. I do like the hair, though, and the expression.

Oy! What's with the unattractive feature suggestions? I think the nose is maybe a titch too big. In the picture, I mean. But I don't have the knack of figuring out what's different--I'm terrified that someday I'll witness a crime and then drive some poor police sketch artist to quit the job in desperation.

You're such a good artist, that even though Kyleen and I don't think it's as good-looking as you are in person, it's definitely recognizable. I held it up (on my cell phone) and said to TODS, "Do you know who this is?" He looked puzzled. "Is that a celebrity?" "No," I said, "it's someone you know in person." "Oh, that's 'Meritahut's Real Name'!" he said immediately.

My friends are so nice.

I once had to look through mug shots and kept thinking "this would be so much easier if they'd just let me draw the guy." The officer was not amenable to this suggestion :)

I've been told enough times over the years to focus on "inner beauty" and a general concept of "attractive" personality because, I'd be told, there's not much to look at on the outside; so that drawing anything other than a cartoony self portrait is nerve-rattling. Also I think I've gone stir crazy and--um--I mean to say, I am trying to challenge myself more and try different approaches to art in the gaps of time between freelance projects....

I could tweak the nose a bit, objectively speaking. iPhone 4 selfies make everyone's nose look weird too :D

I would love to find everyone who said that and smack them.

Don't forget what Donna Barr said the first time she saw you. I suppose it was a bit non-PC, but let's face it, the woman has no filters and we love her for it. "What a lovely exotic person!"

And don't forget the time I posted a photo of you, me, and [livejournal.com profile] ladyrose42 at MW*C, all wearing black Moffitt berets, and one of my other LJ friends, a lady who appreciates feminine beauty, responded with, "Meritahut is sexy like woah!"

Oh. I'd forgotten about that.

You know how I am.

And Donna was such an awesome, amazing guest.

And of course you stay amazingly awesome no matter how weird I get. Argh. Sorry about my selfie issues and public blatherings! :^P :^)

I hate to make fanfic fodder out of your negative experience, but that would be great in a Barney Miller story. I'm just sayin'.

That was my second thought--my first was how ridiculous the officer was being!

There are so many hilariously Barney Milleresque ways that scenario could go :D I really need to watch some of that series again!

By the bye--and you'll surely know more on the subject that I do--there are all those Mediaeval transformation stories where the hero--a Gawain or a Gareth Beaumains--falls for some "hideous" woman and, by morning light, she becomes beautiful. Which, as a teenager, I took to mean that once a fella falls in love, he sees outer beauty where once he only criticised harshly. I kept trying to make student films about Mediaeval folk tales--this will surely be hard to believe, but I was more focussed on early Dark Ages than early Roman Empire for a few years :D

I'm not sure I was reading those tales as the original audience would have. Maybe they saw it more as "man parts tame female wildness"?

You are too kind! If you want to know about thirteenth-century metaphysics or natural theology, I'm your puella. I can do a bit of medieval Islamic epistemology, too, or I could back when I had the chance. Transformation stories, alas, not so much.

I was more focussed on early Dark Ages than early Roman Empire for a few years :D

I DO find it hard to believe! But it just adds to the awesomeness of your self.

I'm not sure I was reading those tales as the original audience would have. Maybe they saw it more as "man parts tame female wildness"?

Mmm. I suspect the latter could be what the other Joe-o-doric on the street admitted it meant, while the former theory was the subversive reading preferred by women and smart people.

Now I wholeheartedly agree with Kyleen. But I also think the picture is lovely.

Thank you! I'll probably get around to tweaking the nose at some point. It's a pretty big honker but maybe less wide :D
