ETA: I only just heard about the earthquake in Italy. I have nothing profound to say, just needing to acknowledge something a lot closer than 1,937 years ago. 🇮🇹

Today marks 1,937 years since the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius that buried Herculaneum, Pompeii, and assorted other nearby towns, villas, patricians and plebeians, unfortunate animals, barrels of fish-pickle sauce, and so forth.

I was going to do some perky watercolours with some brush pens I recently dug out of the art drawer, but ended up experimenting instead with only the grey and even greyer Kuretake Fudebiyori Brush pens. Grey seems appropriate for today!

I tried to make Spendusa look less forlorn, but she says she knows what day this is.

Damon says he just always looks like that.

I'd like to post a comic tonight, too.

Volcanoes are gloomy. Here's a random bunny doodle:

Bunny!!!

Lovely, elegiac portraits. ♥

ETA: I just noticed that Menander and Mus are placed such that they might be imagined to be looking at each other... but the borders aren't just boxes around panels, but the barrier between life and death. *wibbles*

I like the doodles. They're all expressive - and Menander looks like a romantic specter.

I can't remember where I read it, but supposedly some Pompeiians attempted to return to the site afterwards, trying to rebuild their homes and their lives. Apparently, the attempt failed . . . still, I can't stop thinking about people going back to the ruins, maybe in the hopes that their loved ones survived, and were just wandering the countryside looking for them. And then I get sad.

People did--to search for the missing, recover bodies, recover what they could of their possessions, to try to restart...and also to loot. I get sad too :/

One of the cast of characters was inspired by something I read about evidence of thieves who got lost in the ruins, injured, or perhaps overcome by trapped fumes.

We'll see some of all that in the comic anon.
