No new comic today. Neither scanner in the house is working. I didn't want to break down and buy a new one until I could afford an 11x17 scanner, but it's way past time to get something that functions reliably. Who knows, I might even have finished Big Failed Project if I had a scanner that didn't keep breaking down in the middle of the night. And also if I understood InDesign better. And also if I could draw and lay out 30 pages a month. Anyone who reads SPQR Blues knows how slow I am. Which brings me back around to: No new comic today.

There are, however, new sketches-of-the-day, but they aren't Romans. I couldn't scan the Herculaneum and character sketches, either, except for this itty bitty one of the House of the Beautiful Atrium:

itty bitty Bel Cortile

This is the little study-card book (pen shown for scale) I was using to do sketches on the plane, right before I drank too much airplane wine and became passed out:

what goes better with wine than cheesy biscuits and sedatives?

If the scanner is going to keep breaking down, I wish it would at least have the sense of style to do it by catching fire or exploding or something interesting.

All human efforts having failed, it might be time to claim the support of the gods.

What kind of sacrifice would be required to make a scanner work correctly ? And to what god ?

Mercury/Hermes ? God of travels, and by extension of postmen, and then of communications, why not of computers and telecommunications ?

Or Jupiter/Zeus who wields the ligthning, which makes him the master of all things electric ?

Or Hephaistos/Vulcan, maker of clever machineries ?

I can imagine the hotline support for these operations :

"Okay, now spill the entrails... What shape is the liver ? No, that can't be it, you must be looking at the spleen..."

Oh, this really really really needs to be a cartoon.

AWESOME little sketches there, and of ol' Felix :D

Neat little travel sketch pad-thingy, although I'm the kind of artist who looks at that and then thinks "I think I could make one of
those myself..." :D

Yeah, you totally could :) I'm just such a pushover for cute little things in convenient packages. And I figured, if I bought a couple, I'd HAVE to use them and get lots of itty bitty sketching done while travelling, commuting, at odd moments here and there. I'm still working on that.

I also bought about 12 shiny new Japanese inking pens because they look so snazzy. I call it "learning new techniques and tools" and the usual "now I'll HAVE to do more drawing." In reality, I'm just crazy.

I have a scanner I almost never use. It's not 11x17 but it's pretty decent. You're welcome to borrow it, or buy it off me for some very reasonable price.

Thank you. If I can't get one of these machines to work tonight just through sheer willpower, I might take you up on that :)

Right amount of free wine = great sleep aid. Wrong amount of free wine = Godzilla destroys Tokyo!

Yeah, transmogrifying into Godzilla on an airplane never goes well. Those coach class seats are so tiny.

I love the pages you've posted. They are really nice. It's a good perspective to see your rough sketches then with your pencils. There's a lot that goes into plotting the pages and I have a good appreciation of that.

Starting my day, dreading I won't get enough done, then I fly tomorrow. Gah.

May I recommend excessive quantities of wine during the flight?

Considering the flight was at 6:30 am, it would be bad form to show up Denver tanked and having to pick up a rental car.

Made is safe. Playing office worker for the day. Tomorrow is out in the field all day.

Much love, do drawings, and I'll try and post more. If you get in grumpy Yharren I'll make good on my promise on the flight home in the middle of the night Thursday.

Grumpy Yharren is written but not posted yet. But it's so grumpy, I'm not sure it's fair to inflict him on his little lady :)
