...I'm posting Sketches of the Day from Big Nonexistent Project over on spqrblues.com while I work on our Romans. There are an awful lot of pages, so I'll be inflicting these on the site for a while.

The sketches aren't of Romans. Or, at least, they aren't Romans now. I have a bunch of very nice new erasers, so anything could happen.

Thanks for the sketches. Nice work, btw - shame it didn't work out :(

But yes, I'm looking forward to more Romans too!

Your pencil sketches remind me that all your art is really good. Do you have other non-SPQR stuff on the web?

There's some old stuff from the 10,000 Drawings (http://10kd.outsidefood.com) slice-o-life webcomic. But I think that's it. And somewhere there's a lot of drawings of elves floating around, which maybe I shouldn't admit to...and actually I can't remember where that is....

Meanwhile, I'm trying to figure out what time period these people are from... The young couple seem to wear modern clothes, while the elderly gentleman at the bottom of the left page looks very XIXth century with his big coat and walking stick...

It's a pity this project didn't work out bacause these pages look so nice !

There is some time travel involved in the story. I should remove it from anything I post, to make the pages more generic.

Thank you for the kind words. I just wasn't a fast enough artist for what was needed, and I should have been more forceful about that at the start instead of trying to barrel through it. But, also because I'm not very fast, I really do need to find some use for at least part of this art--it represents so many, many, many months of working until I keeled over, passed out on a stack of paper.

Whatever I do with it, I have to disconnect it entirely from the original project. I could add zombies. Everything is better with zombies.

How frustrating... Do you still get paid for your efforts, at least?

No, I'll have to pay them back. Relatively speaking, it isn't a gigantic amount, but still.

On the one side, I feel pretty miserable that they'll have to start over again--they've lost time too. On the plus side, I get to keep the art, which might not look like much, but represents the hardest part of figuring out how to get the story onto the page. The problem now is figuring out a new story to tell with those images :)

Some pages are so specifically tied to the original story, I shouldn't even post more than individual panels from them. But there are also scenes where the "stage directions" weren't really described, so I had to invent setting/movement around swaths of dialogue, and I'd like to create something with those. It'll be an interesting challenge to do something with this, even if I only use bits and pieces. A sort of jigsaw story.

Goshers, thank you :)

I really might add pointy ears to everyone. Then I'll have a whole other set of problems with using the art :P

Pointy ears are the BEST kind of ears.

I'm still looking for a cranky emperor when you have time to get to him. Then off to the funeral games. Navah thinks that'll be great fun.

Cranky emperor is cranky

Cranky emperor before the end of the week! I literally fell asleep while in the middle of cleaning up today's sketch-of-the-day in Photoshop, so not much extra writing got done :P But cranky emperor is mostly finished :)

lovely expressions, but you always have lovely expressions (pencils, inks, colorwork ... pretty expressions on the faces).

Thank you--that's very encouraging to hear. I feel like I always have to work hard to keep myself from giving everyone the same grim expression o_o
