Felix made me move the towel over a bit before I posted the art. (Yes, I hear my characters' voices loud and clear in my head, isn't that normal??) He claims that he does actually own undergarments and even occasionally puts them on.
I've always been rather suspicious of writers and artists whose characters don't talk to them. Even the not-so-nice characters will tell you things about themselves if you listen politely. You don't have to like them or agree with them, but they usually do have something to tell you about the story.
So, yes, it is normal to hear the characters in your head.
My main hiccup is always my complete and utter lack of organisation when it comes to my own comic. I don't know why, since I seem to enjoy organising everybody else :D
By which I actually mean: ok, I'll take on that challenge!
A few weeks back, I told a panel moderator how much I enjoyed the way he handled the panel and that his voice was just like listening to Ira Glass, and he didn't take it all that well, silly lad :D
As for the characters talking to you? Oh yea, normal. My good friend who is an author, tells me all the time she has conversations with her characters about what happens next in her novels as they form. :D
The birds in my artwork don't really "talk" to me, I don't think - though I've never noticed or hadn't paid attention. I think maybe they do sort of take on their own personalities (not the best term but going with it), once they are 'done'..
Well, you never know when you're going to have to run somewhere or kick some barbarian in the nethers. Also, the floor is probably cold and clammy :D
When the characters are chatting up a storm, that's when the story is easy to write and draw. Sometimes I can't get a peep out of them, and it's a struggle. Ah, the fine line we walk with psychosis. And I'll bet there's a real difference between infusing personality into the birds, and an artist who creates a technically correct picture but doesn't see the birds as living individuals. So to speak. They're talking, I'm sure, in their own enigmatic birdy way :)
