hold down the fortI say it's still the 24th of August.

I feel the earth move under my feet

Today is the 1930th anniversary of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Some scholars have disputed the date, placing the eruption in September instead. In support of September: jars of new autumn wine, people wearing heavier clothing, and a coin that sort of looks like it was minted that month. In support of August: an eyewitness account with a fairly clear date, and jars of summer fish-pickle sauce.

In that case, happy eruption day!

And we can party again to commemorate eruption day in September, with all that new autumn wine :)

New wine...?

If only we could have the one thousand, nine hundred and thirty year-old stuff instead.

I just love the clatter effect on the third panel! How did you make it?

And happy anniversary, indeed...

Let's see... the same panel on three different Photoshop layers. Layer one, erased the sound effects. Layer two, tilted counterclockwise, blending mode "darken," 30% opacity. Layer three, titled clockwise, "darken," 10% opacity. A bit of an off the cuff attempt, since I can't remember what in the world I did for Felix's earthquake, except that I recall fussing with it for a very long time and still not being pleased :)

Hi. I think I have a crush on that midwife. You sure know how to draw sexy women.

(Though her nose appears to be un-inked in the second panel.)

The midwife and her apprentice will save everyone! Maybe!

I was too sleepy to trust myself to ink her nose tonight. I think she came out better in panel 2 than panel 4 (and in panel 3, it's hard to say :) ). I did a little Photoshop tweaking to make it look inked.

Also, thank you muchly for the compliment. I try to draw a variety of real, sexy women. (Well, and also some mean, unpleasant ones.)

Wait a minute... why are we awake at this crazy hour? I really should try to be asleep when the local skunk familt makes their nightly commute past the window...

You DO draw a lovely variety of real sexy women. ♥

Even C. Themis would be considered more attractive and likable if she were a lot nicer in personality and behavior instead of being nasty and having a sour expression / disposition. ^^ (Alas, for all her self-assurances of her "loveliness", she hasn't learned that inner intentions, compassion, and behavior toward others are the true secret to beauty....)

From: [identity profile] meritahut.livejournal.com
I had tweeted at some point that, whenever I start making Themis look too much of a caricature, I try to envision a particular person I know who is lovely and striking (inside and out). Themis isn't really modelled on her, but having some sort of nice image in my mind's eye helps soften the drawings--it's a weird technique, but it usually works. Just like how I tend to have the same expression on my face as whatever I'm trying to draw at the time :)

Maybe the Doctor could somehow arrange it so that Domitian and Themis wind up in the path of a lovely lava belch? Oh wait, he tends to restore history, not mess it up... :p

That said, lovely effects for the rumbling!

Refuting August

In support of August: an eyewitness account with a fairly clear date, and jars of summer fish-pickle sauce

1) Eyewitness memories can be unreliable, especially when *shock and awe* are part of the memory chain;even not-there-in-person memory could have slipped because of the overwhelming trauma and PTSD

2) Summer fish-pickle sauce could be the last of the summer batch finished while the new autum wine had just been started

3) (and most important!) September 24 is my birthday and I want it for a birthday present! (Please! @;>)

Oh my. Lovely panels, lovely details.

Do I need to hook speakers up to the computer in case you start adding Sensurround to your comic? I normally web with sound off. (grin)

Holy Crap...it's the 24th of August!? A few days before my (and twin brother) birthday! Yipes!!

LOVE the earthshake effect! Nice!

And yes you draw sexay womens. You know I've eyed Spendi and Seanti this whole time *wink*

It's your birthday (almost)?! And you're all Romulus and Remus and everything? Yipes! Happy birthday! I'll try to remember to get back to Seianti's corner of the story before the end of the month. (Spendi, obviously, is a bit busy in her own corner.)

I'd drool all over Spendi's WTF face in panel 4 if I wasn't so concerned about her and the baby's wellbeing... T__T I believe Domitian deserves to be delivered a can of whoopass. Or a jar, maybe. Anybody with me? *lights torch* *calls up a great mob*
Anyway, it's all wishful thinking... But I certainly hope they get away fast enough to give them the chance to claim the papers buried under several feet of lava clearly state that she was a free woman the moment she gave birth to her child.
Oh, and totally unrelated, but I'm still in love with Justa's hair, just so that you know *stares at pretty curls in panel 1*

And pitchforks. Every good mob should have some pitchforks.

My own hair has been a complete disaster all summer, but at least I can put some stylish hairdos in the comic :P

In which case I hope nosy Domitian, who ordered her not to be freed, does not get wind of this. (Too bad he doesn't end up under the lava himself.) Of course, when he gave the order, he wasn't emperor YET... (Hey, Titus! Do NOT trust your brother!!)

Date: 2009-08-26 11:56 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Meh. He'll be too busy being a cruel emperor to even remember that stupid order given soooo long ago. Or maybe he'll inhale too much toxic gas and forget about it altogether!!
Or at least I hope so. I beg our beloved author to make it happen like that. Pretty please? I'll send some handy jars of wine?

I hope you realize your awesome responsibility. You've left a woman in labor and "Don't worry -- It's just the ground shaking." If this were Mark Trail or Rex Morgan or Mary Worth you could stretch this out for about a month by giving us comics that progress about five minutes a day. But you aren't allowed to just disappear. :-)

Or, if you must disappear, just tell us and we'll amuse each other by, I dunno, having another baby-naming contest. Or placing bets on when the baby will be born (in real time, not Herc-time). Or imagining other phrases for "Don't worry -- it's just . . ."

I'm glad Justa decided to wander downstairs and is being thoughtful enough to hold Spendi's hand.

But the suspense, it is a-killin' me... O.O

ETA on 9/07: I see Spendusa is observing Labor Day by being in labor... :p

Yes, an awfully long Labor Day for Spendi.

I'd better get back to her part of the story tomorrow, or feel her wrath...
