Panel three is beautiful. Both of their profiles. Just lovely.

Kissies.

That's because all I do is sit here on my friends page waiting... every so impatiently... for a new comic to appear.

Then when it does...

And somehow I missed this for almost a whole week! Bad fan, bad.

I especially like how Mus and Felix are *still* touching in every panel they are in together, though the last looks like the the beginning of the end...

The beginning of the end...

Oh, and I'm back to scribbling comics again, I assure you, after getting sidetracked by a trip to see King Tut (or, at least, a smattering of his treasures). I think I caught some sort of bug in Philadelphia. Bad Philadelphia, no cookie. Or could it be the pharaoh's curse...?

Wait a darn minnit here. You were at Philadelphia seeing King Tut? Or did I write that? I meant to, anyway. We were there on Sunday, the last day. I thought you would never go back that godforsaken suburban mom infested place. I was thinking of you but I think we would have recognized each other if we'd seen each other.

Oh yeah, I was especially thinking of you when I learned there was a possible ancestor of Tutankhamen's named Meritaten. Ah, that's where it comes from, I says to myself. However, these royal families are very confusing. And history leaves my brain almost as rapidly as it enters.

Meritaten--"beloved of Aten." I'm pretty sure hers was the delicate crown of thin wire and tiny multicoloured faience and gold flowers that impressed me immensely when I saw a photo of it as a little kid. I can't seem to Google up an image of it--I'll see if I can dig out the book where I saw it; book must be here somewhere. That got me interested in Egypt more than all the pyramids and mummies and hieroglyphics. Such a fragile piece, and one I could imagine being worn by a young princess; it made Egypt very much alive for me. I always thought it would make a lovely headpiece for a wedding. (Or a really whizbang HEadpiEcE of FriNn (http://www.yamara.com/yamaraclassic/index.php?date=2005-07-18), to make a random fever-induced reference.)

Meritahut--"beloved of Tahuti (aka Thoth)." I constructed the name for a story, but I've seen it in the historical record, too :)

I thought the display in the Philadelphia exhibit on the possible family tree for Tut just made everything more confusing, myself.

On the way back from Philadelphia I tried to spot the place where the snowstorm became so bad I couldn't tell where the road began or ended and I drove across ditches and lawns to find a hotel (http://10kd.outsidefood.com/archives/000233.html). But I think that place must have existed only in the Twilight Zone. It seems to have vanished.

In other random Egyptian news: I saw a woman on the train today wearing sandals decorated with a miniature palette of Narmer (http://ist-socrates.berkeley.edu/~mah/NarmerPalette.jpg) on each foot. I wanted to ask her where she'd bought them, but was afraid of giving her the pox or something if I got too close. That, and I was just too wiped out to get up and walk the whole four feet across the aisle. Maybe I'll see her again on another commute :)

I've been watching for a while, and this comic makes me classics-major soul very happy.

Also, it's so strange to hear Mus called 'Alexander'.

You are a genius. *squees happily*

Also, YES, panel 3 is awesome!

Oh no, now I have the Love Boat theme stuck in my head :D

Maybe Mus & Iusta can go on a Mediterranean cruise for their honeymoon. I can't really recommend staying in a scenic villa on Mt. Vesuvius.

A girl has to know when to go in for the kill.

I should be working on the next strip, but I find myself fussing with fixing bits of this one here and there--an arm, a chin...

Interesting hint Helvius is dropping about the Blues. Helvius has been around a while. Listen to him Felix should. (Why am I talking like Yoda?)

I love the way the exciting action scenes are interspersed with these quieter overlapping-conversation panels, in which sometimes what's actually happening is even more important than in the Big!Fight!Panels! (though I love those too).

More please

Pencils are done (http://www.spqrblues.com/images/pencils.png), though they are a bit wonky. In the morning I'll fix up the bits that aren't quite anatomically correct and do the inking, then if I have stamina I'll start right in on the next two, as they are already planned out in scribbles across the illustration board :)

I just discovered SPQR Blues a few days ago, and it's wonderful! I can't wait to see what'll happen next. The strip is beautifully drawn, the plot is deliciously suspenseful, and I love the excuse to think about ancient Rome again (I took Latin in high school). And you made me care about your main characters! At least the protagonists. I want them to be happy. :)

BEST LINE OF THE STRIP: "You're going to have to go through bookkeeping." Laughed out loud at that...

Thank you so much for all you've given us. Hope all is well with you in Real Life (TM).

Thank you so much!

Is it okay for me to admit that's my favourite line, too? :D

The next episode is a little bit stalled, but I'm blaming that on taking a sudden trip to a museum exhibit in Philadelphia and falling under King Tut's curse, because, er... I'm sure it was the curse! Yes!

Now, if I get to work early today, I can work on a comic before the boss arrives, so time for me to run!

Thanks again :)

I remembered about it at the very last moment, just in time to get tickets for the final few hours. We got there early, ate in the Egypto-themed restaurant, and spent many hours in the exhibit. Not the greatest exhibit ever assembled, but I'm glad I went.

Ancient Etruscan secret, huh?

Heh. I don't remember that one, but maybe it lodged in my brain subconsciously, only to emerge now. Soon we'll see Felix raising his hand and declaring "Promise" William-Shatner-style, and Calatoria declaring, "It's not nice to fool with Mother Nature!" Which are the first two commercials I can remember--in fact, I have an absolutely distinct memory of my mother pointing at the teevee with me in her lap and saying, "Look--that's a commercial" as the two of those came on in a row. And I remember thinking, Captain Kirk looks funny. I am so completely warped by television.

(Google tells me, "Dena Dietrich starred as the forest matron Mother Nature in a series of successful 30-second commercials for Chiffon Margarine (1971-79)" and that the Promise advertisements had run their course by maybe around 1976-ish. Anyone else here who can remember these? Anybody? Anybody?)

Mother Nature ads? Oh yeah, I remember those. Of course I also remember ads for
Brylcreem and Carling Black Label beer. Its's because I'm an old geezer, not young and springy like our freckled hostess. DRW.

Aha--the freckling is a sign of returning youth. I just hope I don't stay polka-dotted in all these places where I was previously blemish-free. My suffering vanity can't handle the strain.

This morning, having slept on matters past noon, I have now decided it's the plague. Some sort of plague. Something that swept through Rome, contracted from doing too much research into the past, and activated by exposure to one of King Tut's cosmetic jars in an improperly sealed display case. I am absolutely positive these things happen, and that people are felled by metaphysics every day.

Does this mean I'll get a free pass for the rest of flu season, and can scoff in the face of people coughing at me in the elevator? No? I'll still need that flu shot?

Maybe I can at least get a day off work out of it :)

Well, you might if you get the shot! Hubby and I both had it for a WEEK last year, but the family member who had the shot didn't. Guess who's also getting the shot this year? Been there, done that, ain't sittin' in the bathroom that long this year if I can help it!
