For batch three I delve into sketchbook #2. No post-its on this one, alas.

Poor Felix's-Unnamed-Tentmate. He got killed off about seven times while I was figuring out how to draw the scene.

Sketch for a comic that made it into chapter 2, and sketch for one that didn't. I have no idea what the second one was supposed to be about. Well, other than Felix cuddling with Lolla.

SPQR Blues is also the Modern Miracle You See Without Glasses. Unless, well, you need glasses to read.

Updated with the new web address because I think I might actually finish this bit of art.

No cats today, either...

Oh, killed them all off, every one. Off screen, that is.

Poor fellows.

But Felix did make some nice new friends in the accounting department.

tisk tisk... Surely a shame for the Mighty Third.

Glad it wasn't *my* contubernium! :D

I had originally considered, waaaay back when some comment or other had me dithering about Felix's back story, having Felix as part of one of those "traitorous" legions Vespasian disbanded, redistributed, and regrouped after their commander's bid to become emperor went down the pipes. I suppose this was a more noble way for the fellows to go, though not exactly preferable to a nice retirement somewhere....

Interesting

I really like the approach you ended up going with - where the commander stood at the front of his troops relaying the news of each new Emperor, as the soldiers are sort of on the sidelines, detached in a way from what was happening. I think it touches on an unrealized aspect of being a [Roman] soldier - One swears an ultimate oath to whoever's in power, whether you know who they are or like them or not, even when there's a new one each month.

On a side note that what I find really interesting about coinage in ancient time - here's our new currency, minted by our new emperor - you can see him here on this side so you know who to look for if you're ever in Rome, and here on the other side is something he's famous for...As for that "old" currency, well I guess it'll be legal for now until the new guy mints some new coins to replace it.

New Emperor Coins!....Collect them all!

One way or the other, the real Felix (of course there's a real Felix!) makes sure I get his story right, even when I start wandering off into unlikely plotlines. Yep, the voices in my head always correct me when I'm off track. They also tell me to eat more chocolate and keep me up late so they can watch Futurama.

From a more seriousish perspective, I like to think that all this scribbling in the sketchbooks gives me the chance to whittle away the weaker ideas and find the best approach to the story.

A new Emperor coin each month, now that's clearly just a conspiracy by the mint to get people to hoard coins. Like having a coin for every U.S. state or something....

Hehe yeah, like, collect all of this currency, don't use it or anything, don't try to be a consumer/spender and try and save money.

Although I really do like the idea of the US Mint to do the new quarter and nickel program - it does break up the monotony and I do enjoy looking for the new designs when I get change. I like to think it gets some people to actually *look* at their money and either appreciate it or take a moment, even if it does make them decide to "save" it.

I dunno I guess it's the Printmaker/wannabeEngraver in me...I think it's totally cool that paper money is still printed with a 600 year old process, and coins, what, 3,000 years old?

>"They also tell me to eat more chocolate and keep me up late so they can watch Futurama"<

Wow, you too, huh? Must be a Roman thing or something ;D
