Ahh! What's on that paper she's reading? Something about Mus and Justa?

I can JUST see her blaming this on Felix to be rid of him! GRRR.

And you know what? Two Braids TOTALLY reminds me of Cathunter. She's even got a bit of that look about her in the last panel! I was laying in bed last night thinking on it, and it clicked!

Hee hee.

Fooey, I can't find any Cathunter art on this computer to post in comparison, and I still can't remember where I posted that directory of all the holtie art. This is a clear indication I have too many websites. Time to trim down (again)! Spring Cleaning starts... whenever I am done with the massive projects due next week....

"Antonius Felix, on his rounds."

Yep, he was making his rounds, all right!

And Ky is right about Cathunter - maybe it's just the expression, but I can see it too.

Maybe it's Cathunter's prevalent melancholy expression and tendency to keep a watch over her shoulder for gigantic furry beasts sneaking up to eat the children.

At the moment I happen to be wearing that tshirt on which someone redid the illustration of all the characters at the Rock, and looked down to refer to Cathunter, and couldn't find her until I realised someone had drawn her without a girly chest or a girly waist and hips. I know she's not voluptuous, but... I feel belatedly chagrined! I do! :D

And surely every night watchman gets a break during his nightly duties for a snack.

There is a drawing with Cathunter in it, but it's not as nice as some of yours.

I TOTALLY see Cathunter in her "did you bother to wash... and you could use a little rosemary in your hair" attitude too!

Hee! I LOVE it.

It's not good for investigating a possible crime scene, but it cuts down on the gossip, which is what's really important, after all....

My my, are you suggesting that after twenty years of marriage capped by several years of bitter plotting Themis might be able and inclined to forge her husband's handwriting for her own gain? A pious lady like her? Perish the thought!

A woman forced to lived with the freed-slave born daughter of her Husband? Perish the thought she'd be bitter!

Excuse me, shouldn't you be using her title? That's DARTH Themis to you!

Aw gee, now you've spoilered the big lightsaber batte on the rim of Vesuvius at the end of the chapter!

Themis might get some of those cool red and black tattoos.

I know it must just be me, but you know how the first panel is shown twice because of the layout? Twice now I've been sure that Helvius is repeating himself connivingly. You know, "He had a weak heart." "Now repeat after me, He HAD A WEAK HEART."

Oops, that was me, not Anon. Yes, it was totally obvious that Stephanus had to die because only his death would throw everybody into such turmoil. Now is your opportunity to enlighten us on Roman inheritance law and practice.

I like the rag-curlers in her hair. At least, that's what it looks like she's wearing.

Absolutely! Add a hair piece, some touch-up with the curling iron, ample amounts of hair oil and wax, and there you have it, the perfect hairdo!

oooh, cover-ups already.

You know, when she's not all perfectly done up, the wife looks like she must've been a pretty lady before she got all bitter and aged.

Classic Roman looks, aged by a philandering husband.... And, probably, just her own grim attitude toward the world. But having a grim attitude (demontrated by a wrinkly forehead and frowny mouth) is rather classically Roman, too.

She looks a little like Calpurnia in HBO's Rome, though maybe the name similarity has biased me. Except she turned out to be rather kind (in the TV show) despite her bird-faced looks. Can't find a single picture of her as Calpurnia, but here is the same actress in some British show: http://www.haydngwynne-online.co.uk/tv/126.jpg

Mention of the HBO Rome series sends me into paroxysms of... paroxysms.

Maybe Calatoria will turn out to be rather kind. And above suspicion.

Yeah, sure.
