Doodle 8

I doodled bears while waiting for a meeting Wednesday, and touched up Felix's uniform. Probably would want the mail-shirt to be longer, but I'd prefer to start over rather than keep tinkering with this one.

Thursday is a big meeting day for NY Comic Con, plus I have a stack of other work to do, so I probably won't finish a comic.

Another sketch of the day while you're waiting...

More with the random bookmark ideas. I'm in a strange mood lately.

Should it say "AGAINST Boredom"? I shouldn't do these in the middle of the night....

Sketches of the day

I've really been in a mood to get Felix into a fight lately....

I might only clean up the pencils on this and not ink it. I'm liking the loose, sketchy lines. Read more... )

Here's one I posted on spqrblues.com yesterday, plus some enhancements. I'm thinking of creating a bunch of bookmarks I could include in a Kickstarter to print chapters I-IV.Read more... )

The Felix is based on a Saga cover. Not quite finished. I'll fuss with it a little more.

So I'm pretty sure this happened between this scene and this scene.

Mostly inspired by the conversation here.

ETA: I'll post the finished comic shortly.

It's number XIII--no wonder I'm having such a hard time getting it done.

Here's as much as is scanned so far.

The arm and hand are wrong—but it's still a work in progress. Two versions: plain and fussed with digitally. There might be a final version sometime in the future.

Sketch of the day: old-school cheesecake

I absolutely love 1950s/early-1960s sword-&-sandals movies. I was surprised yesterday to discover one I hadn't seen before, called 79 AD: The Destruction of Herculaneum.

I KNOW, RIGHT?

SPQR Blues Chapter V: Wednesday extra

Wednesday's new comic isn't going to be posted until (probably) late, late tonight--I have some sudden freelance work to do on a tight deadline!--so here's Sunday's comic early.

This snippet takes place in the middle of this scene.

Veritas et Iustitia et Mos Romanus

SuperFelixAt the comic shop last Friday, since I ended up turning a Felix sketch into Wonder Woman... twice... I let him have a try at being Superman.

I wasn't satisfied with how the colours turned out, so I played with it in Photoshop.

In high school, I used to enjoy doing stippling effects by hand. Nowadays, I am not so patient.

Two other versions below the cut... Read more... )

Sketch of the day: Heroic Romans

display wall at Carmine Street ComicsThere's also a pen review posted today (and each of the past 4 days) on spqrblues.com :)

At the comic shop yesterday, I'd start out drawing one thing, then get sidetracked into something else. For example, for some inexplicable reason, I'd start out drawing Felix, but the face would narrow into Wonder Woman.

Not-Roman Sketch of the Day

wolfshead
ElfQuest fan art for our holt from mumblety* years ago. Below the cut.

It didn't strike me until after I'd inked it that, even though this is supposed to be a smaller, part-dog wolf, he probably should have been a little larger relative to our elf friends riding him. No wonder he looks so grumpy!

Roman sketch of the day tomorrow!

So, I've been goaded (it didn't take much goading) into posting some scans from the old, pre-arm-injury sketchbooks. I'll be alternating between not-Roman and Roman sketches-of-the-day this week :)

SPQR Blues Chapter V

Work in Progress: watch out for collapsing scaffolding

I've been thinking about this long, circular journey to relearning to draw. I pulled out some of my very old sketchbooks, and I have to conclude: I was a pretty lousy cartoonist in college. I wasn't so bad at portraits or painting, but things got very weird when I used just pen and ink to do comic book-style art (unless it was ElfQuest or A Distant Soil fan art...).

I'm debating whether it would be entertaining to scan and post some of ye olde pieces :)
