SPQR Blues part XCVII: middle

Two for the LionsFirst person to find the Lindsey Davis reference wins... well, you know my track record for getting things to winners in a timely fashion, so... wins... the satisfaction of knowing a Lindsey Davis reference. Whoot?

Try not to step in the mushy stuff...

All you need is love. More or less.

Hahaha, I love that.

"Ahem, yes of course, that's totally what I meant..."

[identity profile] meritahut.livejournal.com 2009-04-12 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, totally!

Menander really does need a blog so he can get all these things off his chest. And maybe a deviantArt account, with lots of drawings of the person he's infatuated with, and also elves. Not that I've ever done anything like that myself in my quasi-youth....

[identity profile] palusbuteo.livejournal.com 2009-04-11 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
!!! Yeah! Exactly what he meant! :P

[identity profile] meritahut.livejournal.com 2009-04-13 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
ImageI might have to make that into an icon.

I could probably make a tidier icon if I don't try to do it with the limited software at work.

I probably shouldn't be making icons at work, huh?

[identity profile] shadefell.livejournal.com 2009-04-11 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
ah ha ha ha ha!

Nice.

I always thought that the GLBT community would be one that Jesus would preach to/recruit heavily, were he to come around in our era.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_w_o_o_d_/ 2009-04-11 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
He probably would, if there was a second coming. And the self-righteous jesusfreaks would ask him "why do you spend so much time among these... sinners ?", and He'd be all "have you even read the gospels ?"

[identity profile] shadefell.livejournal.com 2009-04-11 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"Look, man. I hung out with slaves, women, poor people, sick people, insane people, and those who had no social or political power. Why do you THINK I'm hanging out with these folks? Gaah. Oh, hey, remember that whole "losing my shit in the temple and casting out the money changers" routine? Yeah? You maybe wanna rethink your whole Billy Graham lifestyle?"

[identity profile] meritahut.livejournal.com 2009-04-13 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it would be kind of awesome if the books of the Bible were renamed from "somebody's name + chapter + verse" to things like, "Jesus loses his shit in the temple" and "Are you even paying attention?"

[identity profile] shadefell.livejournal.com 2009-04-14 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
It'd be easier to find passages.

[identity profile] ricardienne.livejournal.com 2009-04-12 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Oh Menander, so innocent and adorable. I love his slightly gaga soulfully into the distance expression when he things about Mus in the second panel (also his expressions in the third and fourth panels!).

[identity profile] meritahut.livejournal.com 2009-04-13 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
ImageThe boy's got it bad. Teenagers. All of 'em crazy, I tell you.

And I'll take any excuse to use this hastily-created icon again. I'll work on a fancier one later :D

Haven't been around for a while, only to find MORE updates! Yay!
The knowing face of the woman in the third panel made my day n.n Also, I'm fascinated by her arm on the fourth panel. So natural...

I believe it's a man too. There is a hint of an adam's apple I think.

[identity profile] meritahut.livejournal.com 2009-04-12 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe I'll add the character to the Who's Who (http://www.spqrblues.com/dramatispersonae/) page, just to fill in that row :)

so was that temple perhaps one of Cybele?

(Anonymous) 2009-04-12 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
just wondering :)

Re: so was that temple perhaps one of Cybele?

[identity profile] meritahut.livejournal.com 2009-04-12 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup, could be. I'm not sure whether the requirements would be as drastic for servants of her temple and staff, as they were for her priests, but it'll be a few years yet before one of those Flavian emperors decides to outlaw such un-Romanly practices entirely.

Hm, this was the week for one of the big Roman celebrations of Cybele the mother goddess. Parties and patriotism, horse races and crazy dancing in the streets. Kinda beats my family's observances this week.

O__O True. I need to check my eyes...
Also, it's probably a side effect of reading webcomics at 3am.

3am is often when I draw them, so that seems reasonable to me :)

[identity profile] wombat1800.livejournal.com 2009-04-13 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm jealous - whenever I try to draw fingers, they end up looking like bunches of bananas.

[identity profile] meritahut.livejournal.com 2009-04-13 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to draw and paint hands and fingers obsessively when I was around eight or so. So sometimes I get them right now :) Before that, my stick figure drawings had no hands at all. Or feet. So so sad. Fourth grade was a turning point in stick figure evolution.

I think I pay more attention to how my favourite artists draw hands than anything else they draw. Takeshi Obata has lots and lots of hands in Hikaru no Go, come to think of it. I seem to recall spending a lot of time studying Wendy Pini hands, though she has a tendency to leave off a finger :D

Wendy leaving off fingers...

[identity profile] hieran.livejournal.com 2009-04-14 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe that's why you sometimes draw hands that resemble those of industrial accident victims ... *giggles madly*

You know I'm kidding, right? I'll never forget that crazy boss and his crazy "critiques" of your and other artists' work. "It looks like her fingers were fused together in a horrible industrial accident." Wha-- ???

Oh, those were the days. Of something.

Lindsay Davis Reference

[identity profile] wombat1800.livejournal.com 2009-04-12 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm... I'm trying to remember the Falco family slaves, but all I can think of is the awful nanny who kept trying on Maia's dresses and the dopey cook who couldn't cook.

Re: Lindsay Davis Reference

[identity profile] meritahut.livejournal.com 2009-04-12 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
:)

The reference, such as it is, is actually totally hidden... I was wondering whether anyone notices the various alt/title tags on the images. Not that I'll stop including them. They're always good for snickering to myself in a corner while I'm typing the code :D

Maybe Felix could acquire a weird little dog...

Re: Lindsay Davis Reference

[identity profile] kyleen66.livejournal.com 2009-04-12 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Awww! I just checked the alt tags and snickered.

Please don't fee Meander to the Lions! I'll be SAD!

Re: Lindsay Davis Reference

[identity profile] meritahut.livejournal.com 2009-04-13 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Your prize is that Menander will not get fed to the lions.

No guarantees on living to a ripe old age, though.

Re: Lindsay Davis Reference

[identity profile] wombat1800.livejournal.com 2009-04-13 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
Hehe, just found it. I'll be looking out for more of those now.

[identity profile] hieran.livejournal.com 2009-04-14 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
The alt tags are the first thing I read! *giggles*

[identity profile] kit-the-brave.livejournal.com 2009-04-12 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
lkashdfksahfkhakf oh dear. We knew what you meant, Menander!

I see a Beatles reference, but that probably doesn't count.

[identity profile] meritahut.livejournal.com 2009-04-12 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Beatles: also longhaired hippie freaks, just like these strange Pompeiian people :)

The title of one of the Falco novels is in the ALT/TITLE tag on the thumbnail image. Somehow "Two for the lions" seemed to fit the picture, can't imagine why :D
