SPQR Blues part LXXVIII (bottom)

Letting this cat out of the bagThis won't hurt a bit. Yet.

Noblesse oblige
I hope this doesn't seem a bit... anticlimactic. Well, it's anticlimactic if you really think this is the last we'll see of Senator Incognito.

Maybe Felix can use the money to buy the Senator a nice mausoleum.

Someplace quiet in the country, on a verdant mountain slope with nice volcanic soil, that'd do fine..

Why do I keep thinking this is Senator Palpatine? No, no, I know it's not...

[identity profile] meritahut.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Oddly, I did spend the much of the time drawing this with thoughts of Senator Palpatine coming to mind.... can't imagine why...

Ian McDiarmid does have a very Roman profile-- the last time I saw Revenge of the Sith I kept on thinking of all of the busts of old Roman Republican senators at the Met I've done sketches of.

[identity profile] meritahut.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
I should try to make more time to get down to a museum and sketch. The subjects do stand remarkably still.

Usually I just draw gladiators modelled on ewoks.

Because of the cloak ? (At first i was reminded of the Nazguls from Lord of the Rings)

Don't think too hard, Felix. Wouldn't want to set that pretty garland on fire!

[identity profile] meritahut.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Felix says to tell you he's more than just a pretty face and muscles. He told me this while flexing his muscles, of course.

For some reason this got me thinking of senator Al Franken. It might be due to all the positive vibes, all the good luck floating around.

[identity profile] meritahut.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
That was one incredibly narrow margin, out there in Minnesota.

But it sure beats having an imperial dictator overseeing everything :)

When he wants you again -- we'll find you.

::stabby stabby stabby::

Domitian looks like he's lost weight. And Felix is good to be untrusting. Take care of Mus! That is your mission!

[identity profile] meritahut.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
The family is predisposed to round faces and hefty girth, but maybe Domitian has been making regular trips down to the gymnasium. And if you ask him, he'll say, it's not as if he's being kept particularly busy with real work. Might as well look good and work on his poetry. Hmph.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_w_o_o_d_/ 2009-01-06 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm... Does Domitian actually know who Mus is, or does he just like toying with random people he met on the street ?

[identity profile] meritahut.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a wedding! He loves weddings. It's a party! He loves parties. Plus, this one has exotic Herculaneum Hebrews--not at all like those run-of-the-mill people in Rome. And he might have spotted that there's at least one dark-skinned person in the crowd, which is almost as decorative as a redhead. And... maybe everyone will love him if he gives them bags of gold.

Please feel free to mix and match any of the above explanations :)

sounds ominous to me

Maybe he saw Menander and wants him back. He's gogin to want omswething for that gold.

[identity profile] alex-smollett.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, Mus, can't we get at least a tiny smile from you? At least Iusta was happy to get away from Evil Stepmom. And I love how Domitian gives away other people's money. But it's probably "his" money anyway?

[identity profile] meritahut.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually edited Mus's expression from how it was inked, because I thought he looked too happy for the weird situation and odd conversation. But, perhaps one ought to smile when being given a bag o' gold. Hmm.

All money is Domitian's money, of course. Well, if he can just get that pesky older brother out of the way.

"Some senator gave us a wedding gift"

That is an awesome line. It makes me want to stand around the state capitol building and see if some senator will hand over money, or maybe lottery tickets.

[identity profile] dr-phil-physics.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, the banking and financials people got it all. However, they don't know where it is and have no time to go look for it, so won't tell anyone what they're doing with it.

Sweeet!

Ok, so not so bad...Maybe ol Senator wants to get in good ties for some free Garum? I know kind of a silly backwards way but it IS ancient Rome :P

the facial expressions are so good! yay!!

[identity profile] meritahut.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, he probably just wants to talk with Mus and his family about commerce and import/export and be a useful and contributing member to the Flavian administration. He's all heart, that one.

[identity profile] meilin-miranda.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
I have a bad feeling about this.

And now for some reason I want to do the "Star Wars/pants" (http://www.keepersoflists.org/index.php?lid=1906) thing with togas instead of pants. "That toga is fully operational!"

[identity profile] meritahut.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Bwahahahahaha. Those are funny with pants, but amazing with togas. And now I want to figure out what other famous movie quotes will work with togas.

"I am big. It's the togas that got small."
"You're gonna need a bigger toga."
"Get your stinking toga off me, you damned dirty ape!"
"I just want to say one word to you... just one word... 'toga.'"
"Fasten your togas. It's going to be a bumpy night."
"Togas? We ain't got no togas! We don't need no togas! I don't have to show you any stinking togas!"

And, of course: "Toga! Toga!"

[identity profile] meilin-miranda.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
hee! those are great. :)
