We're lucky to have several esteemed Latinists in Finland and thus many good translations with context explanations around.

My version explains that all the practices were truly common in Rome, while others more so than others and some less accepted, and so Martialis just picks on those he thinks are somewhat less... honourable. And he has loads and loads of the same stuff. Go for it.

I read some Latin, but I need a dictionary and a commentary with me all the time, so I prefer to read everything with the original text and the translation in the same book or at least both open at the same time.
