Itty Bitty Travelogue

I'm on the road for a while, but there will be updates both Angsty and Bluesy.

I could turn the world on if I felt like it

I got into town at 1am local time. Nineteen hours on the road and no hallucinations, unless you count several hours drawing (in my head) a comic where Felix gets lost in a bayou and meets Dread Pirate Roberts.

Assuming you can afford to drive around Michigan. Gas shot up nearly 40 cents a gallon this morning in Grand Rapids For No Good Reason -- and it isn't even Memorial Day weekend yet. It'll be Four Dollar Gasoline Real Soon Now.

"It'll be Four Dollar Gasoline Real Soon Now."
And they say there's no real progress in the world. DRW

we have no one to blame but ourselves (and out tastes in cars) However there is one bit of good news I heard today.

http://jcwinnie.biz/wordpress/?p=2220

“They spend less than 2,000 yuan (about $260) to buy an electric bike, and they don’t have to pay for public transportation,” Ma said. “Some people pay 10 yuan (about $1.30) a day in public transportation.” Experts say e-bikes can run 30 miles on 5 cents’ worth of electricity, a rate of energy consumption that makes them even more efficient than fully occupied buses."

electric or gas, 2 wheel beats 4 for energy efficiency. just do all the right safety stuff (training, helmet, clothing)

I wonder how roman 2 wheel rides compare with 4 wheel in horses per mile. :-)

I have an electric bike, though it cost substantially more than a couple of hundred bucks. It has limited carrying capacity... will never replace my little van, but it's really handy around town for things like going to the post-awful, local grocery, bank, etc. at least when the weather's nice. My commute is 155 miles roundtrip a day. In Michigan weather on Michigan roads. Hey, Grand Rapids just got rated having roads WORSE than Detroit. I don't think I'll be taking this overly large person on a two-wheeled commute any time soon. But thanks for playing our home game...

:-) I live near boston, one of the more hostile road environments. But fortunately, I'm only 30 minutes away from much saner environments (i.e. Mount Wachusett or any of the other 2000/3000 foot hills.

Even if you are willing to consider riding two wheels, a smart rider would only ride when conditions permit (light rain or drier). As for your largeness? Not a problem. Suzuki Bergman 400 and 650 can handle large riders with ease. There's even a Michigan contingent of riders.

I'm sorry to hear of the length of your commute. It sounds quite nasty.
